India has an established policy to tape the potential for RES. The Indian scientific establishment has been working on the development of various renewable energy systems. In 1981, the Government of India established a Commission for Additional Sources of Energy (CASE) in the Department of Science and Technology. The mandate of CASE is to promote R&D activities in the field of renewable energy. CASE was incorporated in 1982, in the newly created Department of non-conventional energy sources (DNES). In 1992, DNES became the Ministry for non-conventional energy sources. The Ministry continues to support the implementation of a large broad-spectrum programme coveting the entire range of new and renewable energies.
