Figure 1.2 shows the location of the oil spill as well as the extent of the oil spread. The detached eddy and looped current shows how the currents had spread the oil to the south east (towards the coast of Florida.) BP had paid $34 million to rent the area as it was there to finish drilling up a well. At the time, BP was 6 weeks late and $60 million over budget. This delay effected them as they couldn’t start their next project until everything was completed, which caused them to rush their work and essentially lead to the disaster.
