PAT can reach concentrations of mg/kg in infected apples and
pears . Therefore children are susceptible to
its risk, since they consume considerable amounts of fruit juices. In 1993, PAT was defined
by the IARC “not classifiable as a carcinogen to humans” (IARC,
1986) but it is considered mutagenic. Since PAT does not accumulate
in the body, the JECFA converted its previous PTWI to a PMTDI.
On the basis of a no-observed-effect level (NOEL) equal to 43 mg/kg
bw/day and a safety factor of 100, a PMTDI of 0.4 mg/kg bw was
established .
