ELECTRONIC MAIL
Electronic mail is an efficient alternative to having a secretary type and mail a letter from barely legible handwritten notes that may have been cut and pasted together. More commonly known as e-mail, the business person can type the text on a computer terminal where it can be edited prior to transmittal. When satisfied with what is on the screen, the text can be transmitted to its destination terminal, or terminals for multiple destinations, that can be located in the same office or across the country. On the receiver viewing his/her computer he/she will be flagged that there is a message waiting. Confirmation of receipt by date and time is available to the sender. The receiver can then retransmit the message to anyone else in the network without retyping, while adding his/her own comments. Individual passwords and authorization codes can be used to assure security of sensitive material.
According to one estimate the typical business manager spends as much as 75 per cent of the day in communications-related activities[2]. This demonstrates the need for the faster and the more efficient communications services that E-mail allows.
Teleconferencing is possible where a number of people can send and receive messages in real time. This can allow people to accomplish work together, whether they are sitting next to each other, across the country from each other, or in the same seat at different times[3].
Systems with these features are presently available and will become even more popular as industry communication standards are implemented, such as the EDI protocol[4].
