 Other long-acting injectable atypical antipsychotics include aripiprazole (Abilify Maintena®; dosed
monthly), risperidone (Risperdal® Consta®; dosed every two weeks), paliperidone palmitate
(Invega® Sustenna® [dosed monthly]; Invega Trinza™ [dosed every three months]), and
olanzapine (Zyprexa® Relprevv™; dosed every two or four weeks) all of which are approved for
schizophrenia. Haloperidol decanoate (Haldol® Decanoate; dosed every four weeks) and
fluphenazine decanoate (dosed every three weeks), two long-acting injectable first-generation
antipsychotics (FGAs), are also approved for the treatment of schizophrenia. In addition,
risperidone is also approved for maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder and paliperidone is
approved for patients with schizoaffective disorder. Long-acting injectable antipsychotics are
administered by HCPs.
 The 2009 Guideline Watch from the American Psychiatric Association (APA) states that FGAs may
be equally effective as atypical agents. This statement is based on studies that have been
published since 2002.
 Alkermes’ aripiprazole lauroxil (Aristada) offers a long-acting option for adults with schizophrenia.
