But could these disparate and far from united forces ever form a coalition with sufficient support from both the military and civil society to effect change in economic policy, along the lines suggested here? At present, it appears unlikely. But one thing is clear. If no reforms do take place, the losers will be the Burmese people whose living standards will drop still further behind much of the rest of Asia, and whose hopes for a better future will continue to be frustrated.
