It's been a good & relaxing weekend. Alongside the break from work, time with family, the weekend has been enjoyable because of a good amount of quality sport which has entertained. Between Leeds Rhinos winning the UK Super League, the All Blacks going unbeaten in the Rugby Championship, Liverpool continuing to make hard work of the start to the season, I have enjoyed some of the highs and lows that sports offers.
I often get comments asking about how much I enjoy sport, people wanting to chat about various sporting exploits & sometimes even people questioning if I like sport too much. All that got me thinking 'What are the reasons I like sport? How would I articulate them if someone asked me them?' I think the sub-text of the questions is actually something along the lines of "Do you like sport too much, particularly as you're a Christian?'
I'd never want to get to the point where sport was an idol and took the rightful place of God. I know at times in my life, various sports/teams have taken that place. I think the passing of years has given me a better perspective on sport, so I'm in a better place to articulate my love of sport. So, in response to the questions I'm sometimes asked, here, in no particular order, are 10 reasons why I, as a Christian love sport.
