Whereas being male alone did not reach statistical significance as a risk factor in our cohort, late and very late presenters were significantly older than early presenters. We observed a significant association with rising age, older than 24 years, predominantly in those 50 years of age and older: compared to patients younger than 25 years of age, they had a 6–8.5-fold risk of late and a 16–20-fold risk of very late presentation to care and to diagnosis, respectively.
