Funny queen bee
Bon Jakobsen is the queen of funny videos on Thai social media. Since 2010, she has operated a YouTube channel called “bononstage” (youtube.com/bononstage), which began with videos to teach foreigners Thai language she posted while living in Norway. However, what has made Bon a true YouTube star are her parodies of different characters from a hi-so to a pretty to an ab baew. Bon has just started a new show called Jaidee TV Daily (fb.com/jaideetvdaily) where she gives amusing analyses of everything topical from politics to showbiz. Keep yourself up to date while being entertained by Bon (she does a really dead-on imitation of caretaker PM Yingluck Shinawatra, BTW) during weekdays at 7pm.

HOW DID THE IDEA OF THE NEW SHOW COME ABOUT?
Since I came back from Norway two years ago, I have not watched much Thai television because there’s nothing new on. And once I started working in TV, I saw how the industry likes to play it safe in terms of content. I had several chances to present my ideas to several TV channels but their limitations are endless and, often, new ideas scare people. At one point, I realised I didn’t need anyone to help me make my show happen. I have an iPad and a YouTube account so I said to myself, “Let’s roll!”
DID YOU LOOK TO ANY TV HOSTS FOR INSPIRATION?
Absolutely. I love Jimmy Fallon. I had watched a marathon of his shows before I pressed the record button for the first episode. I like his positivity and child-like fun factor.
WHAT IS YOUR SHOW ABOUT?
I talk about local or international news that has made headlines, from political issues all the way to entertainment. I do it in a light-hearted fashion. I like having small activities so that my viewers can be a part of the show as well. [She asked fans to send in their Queen’s English speeches, for example]. Sometimes they come up with the funniest comments and ideas. I also have guests on my show.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR EACH SHOW?
I usually scan through news websites, both Thai and international, and pick the topics that I think are hot. I list them on a piece of paper and write down some ideas about what to say. I don’t rehearse because I think it would take away the spontaneity of the show. I finish each in just one take. I don’t edit them because I like that raw, live kind of vibe. Just like the way you remember your funniest conversations with your friends, there’s no editing. It’s you and your friends having a laugh together.
HOW HAS THE FEEDBACK BEEN?
I’ve had over a thousand views every night so far. People have been supportive.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING ASPECT OF DOING JAIDEE TV DAILY?
The feeling that I’m actually doing it. You know how you can have ideas, hopes and dreams, but it’s exhilarating to make those things actually happen. The awesome feedback from the viewers is also a big bonus. For me, however, the real joy lies in the actual process of making the show.
ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING YOUTUBE STARS?
Do it for the love, not the fame or money. G
