First Steps
To get a good start on eventual financial security:
Diamonds are important in the early game. The store rooms in your first missions will often contain these precious stones. Gather them to bolster your reserves. As the game progresses, Diamonds become less important, but they're always a welcome acquisition.
After you've visited Mother Base for the first time, subsequent trips allow you to interrogate your own men. Often, they will reveal the locations of diamonds hidden around the platforms of the base. (Don't worry, they like it rough...)
The caves in Mission 6 are packed with Diamonds. They're a great place to top off your reserves in the early game.
Don't let yourself go into the red. Always keep a little extra cash on hand to cover expenses, supply drops, and extractions.

Combat Deployment: The Big Bucks
Diamonds are nice and mission rewards will take you far, but nothing beats pure capitalism for generating profits. By placing money into your Mother Base Combat platform, you can perform Deployment Missions. These missions allow you to send soldiers under your command into harm's way in exchange for resources, recruits, and huge GMP rewards.
By constantly harvesting good soldiers from the battlefield and assigning them to your combat teams, and by building new Combat platforms whenever they become available, you can create a self-sustaining cycle of cash generation.
Deployments can be managed from the field, so it's possible and recommended to send as many teams as your resources allow into the field.
