We confirmed earlier reports14-16 that both diabetic and nondiabetic subjects with prior myocardial infarction have an increased incidence of cardiovascular events. The seven-year rate of major cardiovascular events for diabetic subjects with previous myocardial infarction in this study was similar to that reported for diabetic subjects in the Scandinavian Simvastatin Survival Study (45 percent)12 over a period of 5.4 years, a somewhat shorter period of follow-up. As expected, diabetic subjects had much higher mortality from coronary heart disease than nondiabetic subjects, confirming previous results.1-4
