Methods
This retrospective audit was performed on infants born at 37 weeks gestation or more at The Royal Women’s Hospital (RWH), Melbourne, Australia, during January and February 2008. All eligible infants who had blood cultures processed by the microbiology laboratory at RWH were identified from the laboratory information system. Infants born less than 37 weeks gestation, stillbirths, and those with major congenital abnormalities were excluded.
