A new memorandum of understanding between Russia and Chile is paving the way for trade of more products between the two countries, including seafood.
Chilean salmon industry group SalmonChile, in a statement, said the group has been working with the Chilean-Russian Business Council, Russian fisheries and the Eurasian Economic Union to help hammer out the deal.
Among other provisions, the agreement will allow for exchanging ideas on “investment opportunities and future projects” in aquaculture, seafood processing and related research.
Felipe Manterola, SalmonChile’s general manager, called the agreement a “milestone,” and said it will go a long way toward improving commercial relations between the two countries.
Russia has been turning to other countries, including Chile, since establishing a seafood trade ban against western countries starting last summer. Russia recently signed a similar trade agreement with China.
