With its tendency to take the middle ground between the Mu‘tazila and the Traditionists, Ash‘arism came to dominate the theological scene in much of the Sunni world. The Malikis and Shafi‘is, on the whole, became Ash‘aris in theology, while a significant section of the Hanafis became Maturidis(who in many respects are similar to Ash‘aris). The Imami Shi‘a and Zaydi Shi‘a came to adopt the Mu‘tazili theology.
