M. William Voss, director of the Department of Geriatrics and Gerontology at the University of Maryland, believes there's a strong psychological component to the higher mortality of males. Many men, he notes, seem to lose their reason for living when they retire. I've observed healthy farmers who've worked hard all their lives retire and move to town. They sit rocking on their front porches and a few years later have a heart attack and die.
