2.5. Tire recycling
An industrial engineering article, `Reprocessing of
Used Tires into Activated Carbon and Other Products'
(Teng et al., 1995) was an important source for understanding
whether the proposed partnerships (discussed
in the project description) of tire pyrolysis and carbon
and graphite manufacturing were viable. The article
gives supporting evidence that tire pyrolysis (thermal
reprocessing) is a valuable and intelligent substitute
for burning tires as fuel, or as ®ller in asphalt or
dumping in land®lls and can produce valuable forms
of carbon (carbon black, and graphite). The conclusion
from this information is the introduction of tire
pyrolysis, and carbon processors as eco-industrial
partners on this project.
