Popstars was the first show of this type. Three judges went around New Zealand looking for singers to be in a pop group. Hundreds of young people came to the auditions hoping to become famous. After weeks of fierce competition, the judges chose five of them to make up the group, which they called TrueBliss. Then the cameras followed the group as they learned to sing and as they recorded their first song. The song went to number one in its first week.
