Sue didn’t like this talk that about the leaves. “Do you want a drink of water?” She asked.
“No, no. Look, only eight now. Soon there won’t be any. Tonight they’ll all go. And I’ll go, too.”
“Don’t talk that way!” said Sue.
Joanna still looked out the window, watching the leaves.
When it was dark, she couldn’t see the tree outside. But she lay awake most of the night. Sue was awake, too. Then before it was light, Joanna fell asleep. Sue quietly left the room. When she came back it was already morning. Joanna woke up. She looked out the window. There was one leaf left on the tree.
Sue said nothing.
