5. The production of Bo Nok as a place of concern
The environmental controversy in Bo Nok has led to its production
as place of concern in various ways. The assassination of the
leader of the movement has reinforced the temple grounds as a
key place of resistance, in particular through the erection of his statue
on the premises. Furthermore, the movement has led to the
proliferation of ‘green shirts’ as a symbol of an alternative type of
politics in Thailand. Non-human elements – whales and coral reefs
– also became to play a key role in the production of Bo Nok
through the contested EIA. Finally, the aftermath of the conflict
has seen various public and private experiments with alternative
energy, some directly referencing the past energy controversy.
