Governments in the region maintain reasonably comprehensive regulatory frameworks with
regard to road and vehicle safety standards. In response to the 2011 questionnaire, all surveyed
economies indicated that their respective economies maintained regulations for trucks on
maximum permitted loads and vehicle maintenance standards. Most respondents reported that
their economies maintained regulations for trucks on mechanical inspection frequency and load
security. Although the particularities of these regulations certainly vary among economies, the
standards in general are relatively similar. Of note, in terms of vehicle maintenance standards,
the Philippines indicated that guidelines do exist, but are generally not observed due to
inadequate inspection facilities. This situation highlights the need for sufficient resources and
appropriate infrastructure to support the administration of such a regulatory framework.
