The phrase ‘global land grab’ has been used to refer to and analyze “the current explosion of (trans)national commercial land transactions.” There are two extreme views on land grabbing. The first opposes commercial land deals and sees land grabbing as a major threat to the lives and livelihoods of the rural poor worldwide. The second calls for the improvement of land market governance to potentially provide economic opportunities for the rural poor, although there is still a need to watch out for corruption and negative consequences. There are also other points of view in between these two extremes (www.future-agricultures.org).
