The Gold Coast represents a favourable location in which to conduct
interview based research as it has a high concentration of international hotel chains hosting, on average, over 80,000
visitors per day (Gold Coast City Council, 2005). Interviews were semi-structured, but involved some specific
questions that were posed in order to enable comparisons to be drawn and create an overall picture of the nature of
HR performance oriented measures applied in the local hotel industry. This follows Marshall and Rossman’s
(1999) requirement for consistency in interviews to ensure internal reliability of the data.
