The statistical results in Table 2 reveal very different patterns for the individual
dimensions of economic development. These results reflect partial relationships. For
example, the regression framework isolates a significantly positive relation between
education and church attendance, while holding constant the other development
indicators—per capita GDP, urbanization, life expectancy, and age structure—and the
other explanatory variables shown in Table 2. The estimated coefficient of 0.19
(s.e.=0.04) in column 1 implies that 2.1 extra years of average schooling (the sample
standard deviation of this variable, as shown in Table 3) is associated with 10 percentage
points more of monthly attendance, starting from the mean value for attendance of 36%.
