The primary aim was to survey a young
(two years old) lava flow at 2200 m WD using a magnetometer; the
results demonstrated the value of high-resolution magnetic data for
detecting and mapping newlava flows. The vehicle also imaged the seafloor
with a video system and used CTD data to map a hydrothermal
plume. A series of pioneering studies subsequently used highresolution
bathymetric and magnetic mapping data, collected with
ABE, to investigate mid-ocean ridge crest environments on the East
Pacific Rise
