An example of good policy/bad politics is the mandatory seatbelt law. As a young legislator (David c. Hollister), he was approached by the Secretary of State and asked to read a study by the University of Michigan indicating how many lives would be saved, how many injuries reduced, and how much money saved by enacting mandatory seatbelt legislation. he was also given a copy of a University of South Carolina survey indicating very little public support for this policy. At that time, about 60 percent of the people interviewed in a national survey were somewhat or strongly opposed to mandatory seatbelt legislation.
