These studies were carefully reviewed and formed the basis for the development of the DPP intervention. The DPP was not designed to compare different behavioral approaches to long-term behavior change or to test the effectiveness of a lifestyle intervention that could be “translated” for use in community settings. To achieve standardization of the intervention, an initial structured core curriculum was given to all participants. A more flexible maintenance program of individual sessions, group classes, motivational campaigns, and restart opportunities followed this.
