Muscular Strength
• As noted previously, muscle force producing capability is
closely related to the maximal cross-sectional area.
• Muscular training will increase the fiber size of both Type
I muscle fibers and Type II muscle fibers. Note that fiber
thickness is increased (more myofibrils), but the number
of muscle fibers does not change.
• Factors not effected by strength training:
– Fiber composition (proportion of Type I and Type II fibers).
– Capillary growth or the development of the mitochondrial
enzyme system.
– ATP or PCr concentrations
