One of the largest studies over the 3-year period of 2006 through 2009 was funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. The researcher randomly assigned 1,653 patients who had recently been hospitalized for HF to undergo usual care or telemonitoring via a telephone-based interactive voice-response system. The clinician reviewed the patient's information (weight and symptoms) collected daily by the system. The researcher found no significant differences existed between the two groups, thereby concluding that telemonitoring did not improve outcomes
The Veterans Administration completed a study of 1,401 HF patients to determine the impact of RPM on ACH, nursing home admissions and emergency department (ED) visits in 2002. This study demonstrated a 60% reduction in hospital admissions and 66% decrease in ED visits
