3.1.2. Total GHG savings
There are two major ways that a properly designed ISWM system
contributes to the achievement of climate co-benefits. By
adapting appropriate technologies to treat the different fraction of
waste, a significant amount of materials and energy has been
recovered. Therefore, GHG emissions from the equivalent amount
of material and energy production through virgin processes have
been avoided. In addition, as a result of applying improved technologies,
organic waste landfilling has been reduced, so that
methane emission from organic waste degradation in the landfill
