If I, as a language teacher, aim to school a student in empathy, I must first practise and develop my own skills in this area. Many of the exercises in clowning involve heightening listening skills, honing skills in observation, intuitiveness and spontaneity. Exercises are regularly followed up with a chance to look back, share impressions and observations.
