in treating the effluents having COD of 117mgl−1 from a UASB reactor with C.esculenta. Notably, in the present study, the influent COD concentrations (∼450, ∼1650mgl−1) used was much higher, and the corresponding effluent quality (9.09, 84.5mgl−1, respectively) was better than that reported by Mbuligwe (2004) which was 22mgl−1. This signifies that the SSF systems with C. esculenta used in the present study exhibited comparable performances, however, further studies at scaled up levels only could confirm this observation.
