In 2009, Malala and her family were forced to leave the valley and became IDP's (internally displaced persons). Malala describes leaving her valley as "harder than anything I had done before." They returned to Swat three months later. Thankfully their house had been spared but the school had been used as a bus for the army of Pakistan. Malala's father started to receive death threats for speaking out against Fazlullah. In 2010, Malala started receiving emails that nominated her for peace and education awards. ln August 2010, Malala's father's friend, Zahid Khan got shot in the face by the Taliban. Ziauddin was convinced that the Taliban would shoot him next, but he refused security from the police.
