Regarding the influence of stimulating touch and smell on mood-induction and generating a higher sense of presence; we hypothesized that the “additional stimulation” of these senses, especially the sense of touch, could improve the efficacy when using VR-MIP because it provides more sensory information. However, the data did not confirm this hypothesis. Emotions and sense of presence do not significantly improve when smell and/or touch were stimulated. Given the procedures used in this study to stimulate other senses, we cannot conclude that other augmented virtuality strategies (more or less sophisticated) are ineffective, only that the ones used in our study were not powerful enough or adequate. Clearly, further research is needed.
