The blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine was a Siemens Magnetom Avanto 1.5 Tesla.
During scanning, participants viewed images on a screen, which was positioned in front of the MRI machine.
They were able to see the screen, while lying horizontally with their heads inside the scanner, by using the optical helmet of the MRI.
The screen was a white 1.2*2 cardboard display onto which the images were projected from an electromagnetically isolated projector, which in turn, was connected to a computer in the adjacent room that was displaying the target images.
