analysis. By comparing the obtained elements concentrations in the leaching with the maximum allowed concentrations established by the Norms, it is possible to classify the waste as hazardous or non‐ hazardous. According to TCLP, nine elements are controlled. Pesti- cides and several other organic compounds in the leachate are also controlled. A solid waste will only be considered non-hazardous if the concentration of all analytes is below the limits established by the Norms. For Hg the maximum allowed concentration in the leachate is 0.1 mg L− 1 according to the Brazilian Norm ABNT NBR and 0.2 mg L− 1 according to EPA. The maximum concentration for As, according to the Brazilian Norm is, 1 mg L− 1, while that of EPA is 5 mg L− 1.
