Chile - Total tonnage estimated in Chile in week 37 was at around 12,000 mt (including salmon trimmings), in line with the amount of around 14,000 mt reported for week 36 and above the 5-years average for the same week estimated at around 7,000 mt. The low catches reported are due to the fact that most of the country, is currently under a fishing ban on anchovies and sardines and it will stay like that until mid-October (see Chile section for more details).
We understand that the Technical Scientific Committee on Small Pelagic (i.e., sardine and anchovy) agreed to set a new global catch quota of 122,000 mt of sardine for the coastal area between regions V (Valparaiso) y X (Los Lagos). The decision is based on the new scientific evidence provided by the Fisheries Development Institute (IFOP) following the performance of a hydro-acoustic assessment of anchovy and sardine stocks in the southern-central area during the month of May. According to the Vice Secretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture (SUBPESCA), Mr Raul Sunico, "the increase is mainly due to the adjustments that we had to make earlier this year, when we implemented successive closures and restrictions that resulted in the recovery of the biomass available in the sea". Capture tasks of this new quota will start on 21 October and can be extended up to 10th December, when the recruitment
ban starts.
