On Sundays Rodney Jones likes to go to the beach on the island where he lives to practice yoga with his friends. When he does this,
he is participating in a particular discourse system, which we might call the Yoga discourse system. This discourse system has
associated with it a complex set of ideas and beliefs about the physical and spiritual world, which can be traced back to the writings of
the ancient Indian sage Patanjali and which are intimately connected to Hinduism. Although Rodney has read parts of the Yoga Sutras
of Patanjali somewhere along the line, he does not by any means fully understand the complicated system of physiology, psychology,
and cosmology behind the physical positions he performs. Neither is he a Hindu. However, by performing yoga positions he is in
some way embodying this system of beliefs and concepts, whether he understands them or not.
