Advantages
- Less uranium is needed to produce the same amount of energy as coal or oil, so the cost of producing is cheaper.
- Uranium is less expensive to procure and transportation.
- A nuclear power plant is functioning properly. This leads to fewer brownouts or other power interruptions.
- Life-cycle emissions that the plants do give off renewable energy such as wind power.
This lack of greenhouse gases can be very attractive to some consumers.
Disadvatages
- Uranium is used in the process of fission because it's an unstable element.
This means that special precautions must be taken during the process.
- Nuclear fission chambers are cooled by water. This water is turned into steam, which is used to power the turbines. The immense heat given off by this water can also be damaging
- The resulting radioactive byproducts need to be removed. Storage of the by-product could lead to contamination through leaks or containment failures.
