Since the opening of the fishing season in Peru,
daily landings rose from 17.2 Thd T the first day up to
36.8 Thd T on November 23 with the number of vessels
in operation rising from only 132 on the first day to 367
on November 23rd, 63% of them being industrial.
Landings on the subsequent days declined sharply
mainly on account of bad weather: on No. 24th
,
landings totaled only 13.5 Thd T, recovered on Nov. 25
at 24,4 Thd T with 404 operating vessels of which only
44% were industrial, but remained below 24 Thd T/day
since. There were no “mini-fishing bans” set up by the
government during this period thanks to the relatively
low level of undersize fish. Reports from Lima indicates
that the fish schools were found quite far away from
the coast, outside the 10 miles limit and even as far as
40 miles (graphs 1 & 2).
