It should be noted that in researching this paper, it was found
that the various beach-management plans reviewed focus
primarily on either coastal defence or amenity beach management,
only giving passing consideration to the other aspect and
certainly not taking a truly holistic view of the beach
environment. Whilst this paper focuses more on the sociocultural
system of the beach environment, in that it is concerned
with the human use of the beach for amenity purposes which
are primarily social/cultural, it does provide consideration of
the natural and management systems, as it is not possible to
consider each individual part of the beach environment in
isolation within a holistic beach-management approach.
