FUTURE RESEARCH
A number of research issues need to be addressed to increase the positive impact and adoption of improved forage systems in the lowlands of coastal Kenya. Improving soil fertility through means that are available to the farmers will be a key factor in increasing the yields of the various forage production systems. In particular, better on-farm manure management practices need to be developed because inorganic fertilizers are too expensive. Another important factor is to establish reasons for the decline in the adoption of planted forages. As mentioned earlier, Nicholson et al. (1999) reported a decline in the adoption of Napier grass in the region. Further studies are needed to affirm the causes behind this disadoption.
