OVERVIEW OF U.S. TRANSPORTATION HISTORY
Transportation in the United States could be the subject of a separate book. Transportation
history covers a 200-year period and involves the development of many separate modes of
transportation. Among the principal topics are travel by foot and horseback, automobile
and truck travel, the development of roads and highways, the building of canals and inland
waterways, the expansion of the West, the construction of railroads, the use of public transportation
such as bus and metro systems in cities, and the development of air transportation,
including the aircraft, airports, and air navigation facilities that compose the system.
