Comedy has come to define the Fringe, largely because it's much cheaper for one person to turn up on stage in front of a microphone than a full touring theatrical company. In 2009 the Fringe saw around 19,000 performers from 60 countries do 34,265 performances of 2,098 shows in 265 venues. It remains the template which other festivals try and copy throughout the world. Keith would be proud.
