The average mass of nuts retained on each sieve size is reported in Table 1. As expected, the average mass varied significantly with size (Table 2), but there was no significant variation with the fruit variety. Therefore, this result in conjunction with Eqn (16) indicates that nuts of different sizes hurled at the same speed will experience different impacts, increasing with nut size. Thus, the result provides support for differential cracking of palm nuts based on nut sizes. Otherwise, some nuts will experience excessive impacts with attendant kernel breakage, while some will be discharged without cracking. Lack of variation of the mass with fruit variety, however, may be misleading since shell thickness, which is an important factor affecting nut stiffness, actually differs for the two varieties (Opeke, 1997).
