Previous tissue clture studies with P. alata were performed either with explants from greenhouse plants or from axenic seedlings. An important aspect of this work was the use of in vitro plants obtained form shoot apices excise from seedlings. In spite of the possibility of genotypic variations among the seeds, the main adventage of this approach is the availability of a great number of physiologically uniform individuals, and the absence of seasonal variations that can influence the morphogenetic potential. In addition, these plants do not require a disinfestation step, and usually release smaller amounts of phenolic compounds, which can negatively affect the efficiency of in vitro regeneration ( Garcia et al., 2011)
