Because work takes up such a large proportion of people's live,it is perhaps not surprising that it causes stress. At one time or another, most employees have felt their job is just too stressful. However, what jobs in the world are the most stressful and what makes people in these jobs feel under so much pressure?
According to a poll of over 3000 people, conducted by SWnS for SkillSoft,97% of IT professionals feel the impact of stress every day. Eighty percent feel stressed before getting to work, and 25% have taken time off work because of stress. So what makes IT such a stressful profession?
The strain apparently comes from a variety of factors, one of which is other employees'poor IT skills. If you had to explain the most simple of procedures, such as how to access databases or download files several times every day,you might feel frustrated, too. Not only do IT professionals work with people who have little knowledge, but they also face pressure to achieve targets from managers.
Together with IT in the top five, the other most stressful professions are medicine, engineering, sales and marketing, and education. So what makes such a diverse range of jobs so challenging? Common areas of stress in all these professions are meeting deadlines, doing other people's work, and a feeling of low job satisfaction.
People working in all of these jobs have a range of targets to achieve and deadlines to meet in order to satisfy their employers. If you work in sales and marketing, you will almost certainly have to meet sales targets. If you are a teacher, you will have to meet deadlines for handling in stude'grades. Or,if you are an engineer, you will have to meet project deadlines. A short of time seems to cause pressure in a wide range of professions.
Many of these professions are also highly skilled, and the work cannot be done by just anybody. Consequently, when a colleague is off sick is on vacation, the workload needs to be shared among a limited number of individuals, which places greater pressure on each individual's time. This perhaps contributes to the other common area, which is low satisfaction. For example, the constant achievement of goal simply leads to more goals being set,and thus the cycle continues.
Apparently,a third of people want to quit their jobs to become self-employed. Many feel that if they were self-employed,they would have control over their working day and time. However, the grass isn't always greener on the other side. According to other surveys,self-employment is one of the most stressful methods of working- no matter what the job is. You aren't guaranteed a steady income, and if you aren't good at your job,you might find you don't have one. In the end,it may be worth dealing with the stress of work rather than trying to find a different kind of job.
