Jeanette pierce sat at her desk. It was almost midnight and she was really worried.
" I'll never finish this term paper,'' she thought. '' I can't think of any good ideas. I'm so bored with this topic. how can i write five pages about it?''
Jeanette started to cry. she was exhausted, but she couldn't sleep now. All night she was busy studying for her math and english tests. Now she had to write a history term paper about the Roman Empire. it seemed impossible.
At 1:00 a.m., jeanette was panicked. she had to give her term paper to her teacher in a few hours. she didn't even have one page.
''Maybe i can get some ideas on the internet, " Jeanette thought. she began searching for helpful Web sites. An advertisement went across the top of her screen. ''Term Paper trouble?'' it read. ''Click here.''
''Why not?'' thought Jeanette. She clicked on the advertisement. A Web site that sold term papers came onto the screen. For just a few dollars, she could buy a paper. One of the papers for sale was about the Roman Empire. It sounded perfect. It was even five pages long.
''I'll never be able to write anything good by morning, '' Jeanette thought. ''I'll buy the paper, read it, and get some ideas on what to write.''
Jeanette bought the paper and downloaded it onto her computer. It was 2:00 a.m. "Maybe I should just give this paper to the teacher,'' Jeanette thought. ''Oh, no one will know.'' she typed her name on the top of the paper and printed it. Then she went to bed.
On Friday morning, Jeanette gave the term paper to her teacher, Mr. McBride. she didn't feel good about turning in a paper she didn't write, but she told herself that it was her teachers fault for giving too much homework. "Anyway,'' she told herself, ''no one will find out.''
On Monday, Mr. McBride asked Jeanette to stay after class. ''Jeanette,'' he said slowly, holding out her term paper, ''did you get help writing this?''
Jeanette didn't know what to say. ''Um, no, sir'' she said.
"Are you telling me you wrote this paper?'' he asked.
Jeanette felt her face turn red. she was so embarrassed. she wanted to tell him the truth, but she was afraid. ''Yes,'' she said softly.
''I wanted to give you a chance to do the right thing,'' he said.'' I know you got this paper from the Internet. Another student turned in the same paper. You know you got this paper from the Internet. Another student turned in the same paper. You know you cannot copy someone else's writing and put your name on it. That's plagiarism. I'm going to meet with the principal this afternoon to talk about this paper.''
Jeanette was in big trouble, and she knew it. she would probably be suspended for a few days or even expelled. Buying that term paper was a big mistake. As she left Mr.McBride's classroom, jeanette knew it was a mistake she wouldn't make again
