The evaluation and management
of BPH is complicated by the fact
that the normal prostate varies in size
and that there is not a clear relationship
between the size of the prostate
and the severity of the symptoms.
Moreover, older methods of evaluation,
such as digital rectal examination,
are not capable of determining
the severity and significance of
symptoms. Recently, several tools
have been developed to quantify the
symptoms of BPH and LUTS. These
instruments include the International
Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and
the American Urological Association
(AUA) Symptom Severity Index
