Though the solubility of palmitic acid is more in mixture of hexane with alcohols as compared to pure solvents [44], it displaces the palmitic acid from the active acid sites on the surface of the catalyst and thus lowers its interaction with methanol resulting into decreased yield of methyl palmitate. Liu et al. [45] also found decrease in ester yield during the transesterification of poultry fat with methanol in presence of hydrotalcite solid base catalyst by using non-polar hexane, toluene as well as polar THF at a solvent/reactants ratio of 1 (v/v) due to the change in polarity that these co-solvents introduced to the reaction media.
