At the time of emergence of the sunflower crop in July 1988,there was minimal shading (9.4 +_ 1%) at the TCI by the perennial pigeonpea in its second years (data not shown). Throughout the season there was no apparent difference in the shading at the TCI between the block and strip treatments i.e. in positions B> $2 or $4 in Fig. 1.From September to October, when the sunflower crop was removed, and before the emergence of the post-rainy chickpea, shading at the TCI ranged from 50 to 53 + 4% (Fig. 8). Therefore perennial pigeonpea shading at the TCI was largely confined to 1.0 m distance from the last row being consistent with the growth data during the season.
